For skin that has lost firmness and quality, or a soft area with a layer of fat to reduce, in our clinical judgment yes. The published human studies are small, and both measured a change. Exion is a radiofrequency platform from BTL with three applicators we use: Exion Face, Exion Body and Exion Fractional RF. The two human studies so far measured what the treatment does to the skin and the fat layer, no adverse events were reported in the face study, and our patients' own verdict is below. The price is set per applicator, per session and per course, in writing at a free consultation at Exion Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place, with a price match on any comparable written quote.
What the studies measured
- Exion Face, 7 adults aged 51 to 64, 2025: three had four sessions of radiofrequency with targeted ultrasound, 7 to 14 days apart, up to 60 minutes each. The hyaluronic acid in their skin, measured on biopsies, was up 49% at one month and 68% at three months, against 7% and 10% in those treated with radiofrequency alone. Discomfort was rated 2.3 out of 10 against 5.3 for radiofrequency alone, and no adverse events were reported. Collagen and elastin were not analysed.
- A device matching Exion Body, 23 patients, 2026: four sessions; the fat layer measured on ultrasound was 16% thinner at one month and 22% thinner at three and six months, and 71% of patients reported an improvement. It was a study without a comparison group, published in 2026.
- Before the human studies, 2024: the figure BTL quotes on its UK page, hyaluronic acid up 224% at two months, comes from a study in twelve pigs, not people. The human figure is 68%.
BTL, the manufacturer, funded the face study and the pig study. Our patients review the clinic on review.clinic, where Exion at our clinic holds 4.9 out of 5 from 84 reviews, with 100% saying it was worth it (November 2026).
What it is cleared for, and what that means
In the US, the Exion applicators are FDA-cleared to heat tissue, for the temporary relief of pain and muscle spasm and an increase in local circulation. The Body massage attachment is cleared for a temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite, and the Fractional RF tips, depending on the tip, for electrocoagulation and hemostasis or for fractional treatment of the skin. No clearance names wrinkles, loose skin or fat. The cosmetic use is the manufacturer's and ours, built on the heating the device is cleared for. The how it works page explains the heating and the ultrasound.
Who gets their money's worth
Exion Face suits skin on the face, neck or upper chest (décolletage) that has lost firmness and glow, in someone who wants it better rather than lifted. Exion Body suits a soft abdomen, arm or thigh with a layer of fat to reduce. Fractional RF suits acne scars and uneven texture. Someone whose face has dropped because the muscles have, or whose skin hangs in a fold, is better served by EMface or a lifting treatment, and the Exion or EMface page sets out the difference. The clinician says plainly at the free consultation which fits, and whether Exion is the whole plan or part of one.
What it costs you besides money
A course is four sessions for Face and Body, a week or two apart, each up to an hour; one to three sessions four to eight weeks apart for Fractional RF, in our practice. Face and Body sessions are warm and comfortable and leave the skin pink afterwards; in our experience Fractional RF needs numbing cream and leaves the skin red for one to three days, sometimes up to five. The sessions page sets out each course.
